    Memories and Tributes

  • Mr. Forrest James Lane, Sr., 90, died April 10, 2011 at the home of his granddaughter in Winter Garden, FL.

    He was born in Mason City, IA lived in Vero Beach for 46 years coming from Jacksonville, FL.

    Mr. Lane served for 24 years in the U.S. Navy, during World War II, Korea and the Vietnam War, as an Aviation Mechanic before his retirement as Chief Petty Officer in 1965. After his retirement from the Navy, he worked for 20 years with Piper Aircraft Corp., Vero Beach, before his retirement in 1985 as an FAA Aircraft Parts Inspector.

    He was a member of First Baptist Church of Vero Beach.

    Survivors include his sons, Forest J. "Jim" Lane, Jr., D.O. of Dublin, GA and John F. Lane of Vero Beach; daughters, Louise Roberts of Vero Beach and Linda DuBose of Newnan, GA; brother, Glenn Lane of Seattle, WA; 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Mr. Lane was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Lomey Elizabeth Lane in July of 2007.

    Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Vero Beach, 2206 16th Ave, Vero Beach, FL 32960 in memory of Mr. Lane.



  • Chief Lane was in charge of Line Operations from around mid-1960 until after I left in October 1963. He was respected by the leaders of VFP-62 and loved by all us young maintenance sailors who worked the line.

    He was true leader!
